How to read these figures

The FPI number is the depositories' daily report of foreign portfolio investors' net investment in equity, new issues included. The DII number is NSDL's daily report for mutual funds, insurers, banks, AIFs and other domestic institutions. Each is dated the day it is reported, usually a day after the trades. Fund houses' own portfolios give a monthly cross-check: the 45 we read net bought ₹65,454 cr of stocks in September.

What we do not know

Who inside each group bought or sold: the daily reports carry totals only. NSDL's fortnightly sector figures will show where the foreign money went.
