What is smart money in Indian stocks?

“Smart money” is market shorthand for money run by professional or well-informed investors: mutual funds, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs, still often called FIIs), domestic institutions and company insiders. What they hold and trade is disclosed in public filings; this page explains each filing and where to find it here.

Smart money, filing by filing

What does smart money mean?
A common name for institutional and insider money: mutual funds, FPIs (FIIs), insurers, banks and pension funds (together, DIIs), and promoters, directors and senior staff. The term says who is investing; it does not mean their trades make money.
How can I see what mutual funds are buying?
Every mutual fund house publishes its full portfolio each month under SEBI rules. Fund Tracker India compares each month with the one before: stocks bought and sold by mutual funds lists the largest changes, and each stock page shows which fund houses and schemes hold it (for example, Axis Bank Limited). Fund house portfolios and fund manager portfolios show the same changes by holder.
Where is FII and DII data today?
FII DII data today shows foreign portfolio investors' net investment in Indian equity by day and month, and domestic institutions' net buying, from the depositories' and exchanges' daily reports.
What are bulk and block deals?
A bulk deal is a trade in which one party buys or sells more than 0.5 % of a company's listed shares in a day; a block deal is a single large trade in the exchange's separate block window. Both are reported with the buyer's or seller's name: see bulk and block deals today.
What is insider trading data?
Promoters, directors and key managerial staff must disclose their own trades in their company's shares under SEBI's insider trading regulations, and the company files each disclosure with the exchange. These are lawful, disclosed trades: see insider trades on NSE.
How current is the data?
Mutual fund portfolios are monthly, published within about ten days of month end. FII/DII flows, bulk and block deals and insider trades are daily. Every number on the site carries its source and date; Status shows when each dataset last updated.
Is following smart money investment advice?
No. These pages show what was disclosed, with its source and date. Institutions buy and sell for many reasons, such as inflows, redemptions, index changes and limits, so a disclosed trade is a fact about that holder, not a view on the stock. Fund Tracker India is not investment advice.
